Bird Bath Maintenance

It is important to maintain a clean bird bath for the health of your birds and to prevent the emergence of mosquitoes. Follow these simple steps to have a fun experience watching your birds enjoy the bird bath:

  1. Place your bird bath in the shade
  2. Empty, clean and refill your bird bath at least once every three days. Use a stiff bristled brush and fresh water to clean the bird bath surface

These two simple steps will reduce/prevent:

  • Algae - Algae are tiny aquatic plants that have no roots, birds can carry algae spores on their feathers. Once the spores are in the water a combination of sunlight and heat will promote growth. If algae does appear, use bleach to scrub the bird bath and then rinse thoroughly
  • Mosquitoes - The female mosquito lays her eggs in standing water. The mosquito life cycle from egg to adult emergence is typically eight to ten days. A bird bath cleaning once every three days will prevent the development of adult mosquitoes

Place a Water Wiggler in your bird bird bath and prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs in the bird bath. The water wiggler operates on two "D" batteries and impeller rotates and creates ripples in the water. Mosquitoes do not lay their eggs in moving water and the motion helps attracts the birds. For bird health, please clean your birdbath at least once every three days.

Helpful Hint

Is your birdbath being tipped over at night? If so, it is more than likely a raccoon. Raccoons need water just like our birds and squirrels. To solve this inconvenience place a dish of water on the ground by the existing birdbath. This will reduce the tip overs.
